Energy Storage

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) play an essential role in integrating and accelerating renewable energy deployment. By helping to balance energy supply with demand, Energy storage greatly improves the efficiency of renewable sources and allow maximal renewable energy penetration into the energy network. Energy storage can provide support services to the electricity grid, or to an individual consumer behind-the-meter. Energy storage may be deployed as stand-alone systems or with power generation as part of a hybrid energy system or microgrid scheme.

Energy storage is flexible, dispatchable and readily deployable at electricity grid level. This means energy storage systems can help to support grid services such as frequency response, shedding, adding and voltage stabilisation effectively and ‘almost’ instantaneously. Unexpected events such as extreme weather incidents, technical failures or even pandemics can put their toll on the power network. Energy storage technologies can support operational resilience. Energy storage systems can be used as an alternative to back-up generators such as diesel-based systems to improve the emissions performance of an industrial or commercial facility.

Business Case Options

Investing in energy storage technology allows businesses create additional revenues though access to demand side response markets and peak load shaving whilst promoting renewable energy enablement.

Peak shifting

Peak shifting is the ability to use generated electricity at a time when electricity demand charges are high to reduce energy bills. During times of high supply and low demand, the surplus energy generated can be stored for future use through the charging / discharging of batteries. This ‘shift’ in peak energy generation is known as peak shifting and allows for the most efficient use of the renewable energy sources.

Demand side response

Financial payments are often available for users who can change their electricity demand at short notice. Demand side response is where an electricity consumer reduces their consumption of electricity from the network at specific times. Alternatively, a network operator may penalise an electricity consumer from drawing electricity from the grid at specific times, or based upon the maximum import of electricity from the network.

Peak shaving

Peak shaving, is a strategy for eliminating demand spikes by reducing electricity consumption via energy storage. Through monitoring of grid behaviour, batteries can be charged by the grid at periods of low demand and low costs, then discharged to site facilities when grid electrical costs are high. This allows businesses to pay the cheapest electricity rates and save significant amounts of money on their utility bills.

Black start / island mode

Countries with unstable grid power and frequent outages are often required to operate without a grid connection. Black start is the capability for the battery to recover a power plant in seconds during an unforeseen interruption. Energy storage is ideally suited for black start application as they can independently re-energise the grid and can be used simultaneously with other sources of back-up power such as INNIO Jenbacher engines.

Microgrids and Hybrid Energy Systems

Clarke Energy’s flexible approach to energy solutions allows us to combine the benefits of instantaneous battery response with the longevity of a gas engine, whilst also balancing with renewable power generation for complete site optimisation.

Battery energy storage systems can be deployed as part of a hybrid power plant in parallel with other technologies such as solar wind, heat pumps, thermal stores. These hybrid systems can be managed by an advanced microgrid control and optimisation systems such as the Heila EDGE platform.
