Clarke Energy Expands into Tanzania

Tanzanian flagClarke Energy is pleased to announce it has been awarded the distributorship for GE Power & Water’s Jenbacher gas engines in Tanzania. The company has now established an office in Dar es Salaam. Clarke Energy is a specialist in the engineering, installation and maintenance of gas-fuelled combined heat and power plants. These power plants operate on a range of renewable and low carbon fuels.

Clarke Energy’s approach is to achieve customer satisfaction focusing on aftersales support in order to achieve maximum equipment availability. Clarke Energy operates a policy of localisation, investing in and training local people helping develop the country’s economy. In Tanzania, Clarke Energy will be training Tanzanian nationals to support the gas to power product and grow an expert, locally-based sales and service capability.

Finds of natural gas in Tanzania have increased sharply in recent years. The gas that is found in Songo-Songo Island is sent via a gas pipeline to Dar es Salaam. This gas is currently is sent to a number of industrial users, three of which are currently operating with GE’s Jenbacher gas engines. The natural gas availability in Tanzania is set to expand with the passage of a new gas pipeline that is being developed by the Tanzanian government.

Natural gas is a clean, low carbon fuel. Its utilisation for the production of distributed power can enable industrial users to have stable electricity supplies, isolated from the electricity grid. Industrial cogeneration using gas engines can facilitate the highest levels of fuel efficiency. In a combined heat and power configuration, surplus heat from the engine can be used to generate hot water or steam for local users. Heat can also be used to provide a cooling load for local users if the power plant is configured for trigeneration.

Clarke Energy’s sales and service office is located Dar es Salaam and is led by Gary Tong. Gary is a highly-experienced service and commissioning engineer that was previously employed by GE’s Jenbacher subsidiary in the Netherlands.

Alan Fletcher, Main Board Director at Clarke Energy states

“In order for a country to develop and prosper it requires a reliable, efficient and cost effective electricity supply. Power prices globally are rising. Using Tanzania’s gas supply coupled to our international experience we aim to bring an efficient electricity supply to the country using ‘distributed generation’. In addition Clarke Energy will create employment opportunities during both the construction phase and operational life of the plants. We look forward to helping Tanzania grow whilst growing our business”
