Work Experience Stories
Jack – MEng Hons Student – Mechanical Engineering
Clarke Energy – Power Generation Solutions, Knowsley Business Park, Liverpool, England
“Clarke Energy gave me the opportunity to gain valuable work experience for a week at their offices in Knowsley. Over the course of the week, I visited different areas of the company and was taught how their roles bring stability and innovation to the company. On my first day I had a tour of their offices and had meetings to learn the history and objectives of the company. Later that day I got the chance to sit with the business development department and discuss the future of the company and the technologies that will be utilized such as solar energy, battery storage, carbon capture and their ideas behind micro grids. The second day was spent with sales and proposals, seeing the development of a project from the enquiry to the signed contract which gave me a further understanding of how each department requires a background in engineering to operate properly. Next, I conducted research on green hydrogen utilization and production since is a step the company is taking to improve their carbon footprint. Later that day I had a meeting with one of the engineers working at Clarke Energy to discuss my findings and to learn more about the company’s plans for hydrogen and battery technologies.
The day following that I had a visit to an onsite project at Ellesmere Port where six large gas engines were installed and needed the components tagged. I had a tour of the site and then participated in tagging the components of the engines. On the final day of my work experience I spent the day with the engineering department learning the steps after the sales department hands it over, from preparation reports to the designs and graphs drawn for construction.”
