Supporting the modernisation of district heating with reliable, efficient power
The Municipality of Botoșani has undertaken a major upgrade of its Centralised Thermal Energy Supply System (SACET), aiming to improve efficiency, reliability, and sustainability across the district heating network. Following a competitive public tender, Clarke Energy was selected to supply the new technical solution based on the best quality-price ratio.
As part of this development, Clarke Energy is delivering an INNIO Jenbacher JMS 624 gas engine that will expand the site’s high-efficiency cogeneration capability. The system integrates with two existing JMS 624 units that Clarke Energy installed in 2012, strengthening overall performance and supporting the municipality’s long-term energy objectives.
The project is focused on increasing the proportion of thermal energy generated through high-efficiency cogeneration, improving the economic performance of heat supply, and raising revenue through additional electricity production. It also contributes to lowering primary energy consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the use of modern generation technology.
The technical solution includes a Jenbacher JMS 624 generator package with a DIA.NE XT4 control system and associated auxiliary equipment. The engine delivers 4,498 kWe at a power factor of 1.0 and operates at 6.3 kV. Emissions performance meets stringent requirements with CO levels of no more than 100 mg/Nm³ and NOx at no more than 95 mg/Nm³, both referenced at 15 percent O₂ in dry gas.
Botoșani, located in the Moldova region of Romania, has a population of around 90,000 residents. The modernisation of its heating network forms part of a wider shift towards more efficient and lower carbon energy systems.
The addition of the new Jenbacher unit strengthens the resilience and efficiency of SACET Botoșani. Combined with the existing engines, the expanded cogeneration system delivers higher output, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions, supporting both immediate operational improvements and longer-term sustainability for the city.
