Clarke Energy Makes Major Acquisition in Bangladesh

August 13, 2013

Clarke Energy has acquired the Bangladesh arm of Orient Power Systems and GE Jenbacher has appointed Clarke Energy as distributor and service provider for Jenbacher gas engines in Bangladesh.

  • Clarke Energy’s new operations acquire 120 employees from Orient Energy Systems Bangladesh
  • Clarke Energy has been granted distribution and service provider status for GE Jenbacher gas engines in Bangladesh
  • Clarke Energy to help support the over 450 Jenbacher units that have already been installed in the country

Bangladesh has large domestic reserves of natural gas. These resources have been utilised to deliver stable supplies of power in Bangladesh for a number of years. The country offers great opportunities for reciprocating gas engine technology, particularly for the independent power producer and captive power plant segments.

Jenbacher has a successful track record in Bangladesh with over 450 gas engines installed to date in the country, each with an electrical output of between 0.3-4.4MW. This installed base helps to maintain stable power supplies for the population and industry. The country was previously served by Orient Energy Systems. Clarke Energy has acquired 120 employees from the previous distributor and service provider. This team will form the nucleus of the new operations with Clarke Energy operating a policy of localisation; training local people to the highest international standards. This will also give customers comfort that their units will continue to be served with the highest levels of product support.

The Bangladesh operations will benefit from their proximity to Clarke Energy’s existing operations in India and Bengali speaking team in Kolkata.

The focus of Clarke Energy’s new operations will be to develop an advanced service infrastructure with in-country parts stockholding, further train and develop the Bangladesh service team and to expand Jenbacher’s installed base in this significant gas to power segment. Clarke Energy provides added value to the core Jenbacher product through the engineering, installation and maintenance of power plants using the generation assets. Clarke Energy places the highest importance on compliance with all local and international regulations and integrity is a core company value.

Jamie Clarke, Chief Executive Officer of Clarke Energy stated ‘This is an important milestone for Clarke Energy which will further expand our global operations and our presence in South Asia. There is a large Jenbacher installed base in Bangladesh and existing customers will benefit from our after-sales support ethos. It is our intention from the outset to focus on increasing in-country spare parts and service engineer coverage in order to help support the continuing high operational availability of Jenbacher units in Bangladesh’.
