Triton Power and Clarke Energy Sign Contract for 49MWe Hydrogen-Ready Gas Peaking Plant at Deeside Power Station

Deeside, UK – 22 May 2025Triton Power and Clarke Energy are pleased to announce the signing of construction contracts for a new 49MWe gas-fired peaking plant at the Deeside Power Station, owned and operated by Triton Power. The facility, scheduled to begin construction in June 2025, represents a key milestone in supporting the UK’s energy transition and grid resilience.

The project is located on the site of the former 500MW Deeside Power Station, which ceased generation in 2018. Since 2020, it has been the site of a “world-first” stability service contract using repurposed gas turbines, operating as synchronous compensators. The new plant is a continuation of Triton Power’s broader vision to develop a renewable energy enabling hub. The facility will deliver fast-response power to the grid during peak demand periods, playing a vital role in balancing the increasing share of intermittent renewable generation.

Clarke Energy has been appointed principal contractor to deliver a full turnkey EPC wrap solution, including a bespoke powerhouse, housing 11 hydrogen-ready JMS624 4.5MWe INNIO Jenbacher gas engines. Designed to support peak grid demand, the facility also incorporates provisions for future hydrogen conversion and energy storage integration, aligning with Triton Power’s decarbonisation goals.

Matthew Foster, CCO of Triton Power said: “Clarke Energy’s future-focused design approach ensures this site can evolve with the North West and the wider UK energy landscape. This project reinforces Deeside’s role at the forefront of innovation in flexible power and stability, essential to whichever energy transition scenario plays out in the future. This next phase of development marks a significant step in transforming the 23-acre site, supporting a secure, low-carbon energy future for the UK. Led by our Station Manager Phil Rafferty, we are delighted to be partnering with Clarke Energy to realise this”.

Andy Cooper, UK Sales Director of Clarke Energy said: “We’re proud to be strengthening our relationship with Triton Power through this landmark project at Deeside. This collaboration is built on a shared commitment to delivering reliable, flexible power while enabling the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy future. As EPC contractor, Clarke Energy is dedicated to delivering a high-quality, future-ready solution that reflects the ambition and innovation both organisations bring to the sector”
