Clarke Energy Appointed Principal Contractor for Third Grid-Resilience BESS Project with Field

  • The third project in the portfolio, a 50MW/100MWh BESS system at Drum Farm near Keith, Scotland, is scheduled to commence site-works in late summer 2025 and reach completion in 2026.
  • Clarke Energy has been appointed as the principal contractor, responsible for delivering full engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, as well as the balance of plant (BoP).
  • The project will deliver critical grid services, strengthening system flexibility and frequency stability.

Clarke Energy has been appointed as the principal contractor for its third battery energy storage system (BESS) project in partnership with Field, marking another milestone in the delivery of essential infrastructure supporting the UK’s transition to a low-carbon, resilient power system.

The 50MW/100MWh BESS project, located at Drum Farm near Keith, Scotland, will begin construction in early autumn 2025 and is scheduled for completion towards the end of 2026. As principal contractor, Clarke Energy will deliver full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services, including the balance of plant (BoP). Envision has been selected as the battery supplier.

The 50MW/100MWh Drum Farm BESS will be situated just north of the B6 transmission boundary, one of the UK’s most constrained grid bottlenecks between England and Scotland. This location has been a key driver of spiralling constraint costs. Drum Farm is strategically positioned to relieve grid pressure, enhance frequency stability, and increase system flexibility, which are all critical to the UK’s future energy security.

This follows Clarke Energy’s previous work with Field on two other projects, a 40MWh BESS system in Newport, South Wales and a 50MWh BESS system at Whitebirk in Blackburn.  Clarke Energy provided EPC and BoP services and now also manages its BoP operations through long-term maintenance agreements (O&M) on the completed Newport project and will be doing the same once Whitebirk and Drum enter operation.

Adam Wray-Summerson, Technical Sales Director, Clarke Energy said: We’re proud to be strengthening our partnership with Field on another vital energy infrastructure project. Our EPC and BoP capabilities are tailored to deliver the reliability and performance that grid-scale storage demands, particularly in areas experiencing network constraint issues, like Drum Farm. This growing collaboration between Clarke Energy and Field proves a shared commitment to developing energy storage assets that support the UK’s evolving energy mix and enables a net-zero power grid”.

Chris Wickins, Technical Director, Field said: “Closing contracts at the Drum Farm site represents another step forward for Field as we accelerate the transition to a secure, clean energy system. This is Field’s third time working with Clarke Energy and the first in Scotland, so we look forward to delivering a project that alleviates network constraints and delivers a more flexible energy system”.
