Sustainable Business Operations
Powering the transition to a low-carbon future with resilient, sustainable energy systems, whilst operating to high standards of sustainability in our own operations.
Powering Impact
Clarke Energy, a Rehlko Company, is a global leader in the engineering, installation, and maintenance of distributed, low-carbon energy systems. With a legacy rooted in energy efficient combined heat and power (CHP) gas engine technology, our capabilities have grown to encompass a diverse portfolio of sustainable energy solutions, including battery energy storage systems (BESS), biogas upgrading, hydrogen systems, microgrids, and carbon capture technologies.
Our operations and project delivery are designed with sustainability at the core, whilst helping customers improve energy efficiency, resilience, and emissions reduction across critical infrastructure and industrial applications. We work in close partnership with our clients and suppliers to ensure our solutions contribute meaningfully to net-zero goals and a more sustainable future.
As part of Rehlko, Clarke Energy supports a shared commitment of putting resilience at the heart of sustainability. Through initiatives like Powering Impact, we enhance product compatibility with sustainable fuels, help customers transition to Net Zero, and turn backup power into a sustainable, strategic asset. Together, we strengthen energy resiliency, reduce emissions, and create lasting impact. Learn more in the full Powering Impact report:
Sustainability in Business and Operations
Across Clarke Energy’s global operations, we uphold strong environmental principles, guided by ISO 14001 environmental management standards in multiple regions and first issued in 2015. Our localised sustainability initiatives reflect regional conditions and aim to maximise recycling, minimise energy use, and enhance operational efficiency.
Clarke Energy operates as part of Rehlko. Together, we support Operational Excellence as part of our Powering Impact strategy, meaning our people, processes, and products are sustainable from the inside out. We are committed to environmental stewardship, safety, and continuous improvement across all activities. This approach is embedded into our business culture and day-to-day operations, guided by our goal to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 90% by 2045, driving meaningful internal action and continual improvements across the organization.
Regional Sustainability Measures
• ISO Certifications: Many regions are ISO 14001 certified (UK, Australia, France), while Greece is progressing toward ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certification.
• Renewable Energy Generation: Our UK facility generated 87 MWh of solar energy in 2023, reducing consumption by 20%, while our Australian office generated 54.6 MWh from November 2023 to October 2024.
• Renewable Power Supply: The UK facility is certified by TotalEnergies as powered by 100% renewable electricity.
• Heat Recovery: An Altherma heat recovery unit reuses waste heat from the air-conditioning system to provide daily hot water for approximately 200 staff, reducing fossil fuel use.
• Fleet and Transport: EV charging stations are installed at our UK and French headquarters, and several customer CHP sites in Ireland now include integrated vehicle charging points.
• Forklifts and Equipment: The UK and Australian workshops have transitioned to electric forklifts, reducing emissions from propane and diesel models still used in some other regions.
• Waste and Recycling: The UK operates under a Zero Waste to Landfill policy, achieving a 70% recycling rate in 2023, up from 51% the previous year. Recycling programmes for wood, metals, cardboard, and plastics are active across France, Ireland, Greece, and Australia.
• Employee Engagement: Environmental Awareness Week and IOSH Environmental Responsibilities training help employees across all regions understand and improve sustainability in daily operations.
• Continuous Improvement: Clarke Energy is developing standardised reporting metrics to improve data consistency and sustainability tracking across all international offices.
Service Operations
In service operations, used oil is recycled wherever possible, and key components such as cylinder heads are reconditioned to extend asset life and minimise waste. Our Knowsley facility exemplifies circular economy principles by refurbishing engines and parts and reducing the need for new manufacturing.
Supporting Global Sustainability
Clarke Energy actively contributes to international sustainability initiatives through its involvement with organisations such as the Cogen World Coalition, Cogen Europe, the World Biogas Association, the Renewable Energy Association (UK), ATEE (France), the Combined Heat and Power Alliance (USA) and the Indian Biogas Association
These partnerships support the advancement of energy efficiency through CHP, the utilisation of renewable fuels such as biogas, biomethane, and hydrogen, and the development of sustainable waste management practices. We also advocate for equitable access to clean energy technologies in developing regions.
