Clarke Energy has made great strides in Africa, building on an already well-established presence in the region. Since GE’s Distributed Power announcement of an agreement with Clarke Energy to serve as GE’s distributor for six additional countries in Africa, the company increased its distribution and service network to 25 countries worldwide. Boasting an installed base exceeding 5.4GW of power and a workforce of over 1,100 people while continuing to offer the expertise and resources to deliver unbeatable end-to-end product support through a reliable, accountable localised service.

African Exports – The Challenges

“Energy generation in Africa is being caught between two opposing pressures—power demand, particularly from industry, and chronic power shortages and service interruptions… GE offers gas engine technologies and renewables solutions to help bridge the supply-and-demand gap, creating more energy self-sufficiency for African companies and reducing the industrial carbon footprint,” said Didier Lartigue, Managing Director, Clarke Energy. “In response to Africa’s energy situation, Clarke Energy is installing GE’s advanced gas-fuelled Jenbacher gas engines to provide dependable on-site power for African companies.”

Clarke Energy – Applications and Solutions

Our work on the continent enables industries to utilise the local natural gas supply efficiently, with networks of gas engine-based cogeneration systems which provide a stable supply of electrical power. Biogas, formed by the anaerobic decomposition of putrescible organic material, CHP (combined heat and power or cogeneration) disposes of problematic wastes while producing a low carbon fertiliser. Coal gas or furnace gas combines profitability with overall efficiency of up to 90% in the case of combined heat and power, and 43.4% in the case of power generation alone, providing a reduced environmental impact.

Our services range from the supply of an individual engine, through to the complete turnkey installation of a multi engine power plant. The generators work on different types of gas including natural gas and numerous renewables such as biogas, sewage gas and landfill gas. In addition the gas engines can even be deployed when using gas that is emitted during the process of crude oil extraction or coal mines. Where the escaped methane would be released in the atmosphere, it would now be captivated to produce energy. All our installations are either high efficiency, renewable or low carbon systems that give significant environmental and social benefits across the world
