Ed Miliband visited St Thomas’ Hospital to open a new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant installed by Clarke Energy. The Jenbacher JMS620 CHP gas engine is part of a major investment by the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust as part of the recently launched 10:10 campaign – a national drive to reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
Jenbacher gas engines have been installed at both St Thomas’ and Guy’s Hospitals to produce enough electricity to meet half of the Trust’s requirements. The waste heat generated, in the form of steam and hot water, is collected and used for the hospitals’ heating, including space heating and hot water.
The high efficiency of the engines and low maintenance cost were important factors for the Trust to achieve significant cost savings. Overall, the units will reduce CO2 emissions produced by the Trust by almost 11,300 tonnes per year. It will also save the trust more than £1.5 million in energy costs annually – one of the largest savings from a CHP for an NHS trust
