Cogeneration Renovation of Cofely’s Saint Quentin Installation

In 2012, Cofely’s Picardie branch, the site’s exploiter, entrusted the renovation of a cogeneration installation in Saint Quentin, in the Aisne province, to Clarke Energy.

Initially, this “boiler room” consisted of a turbine installed in a soundproof enclosure. Cofely could either renovate the existing turbine, or replace it with a gas engine.

Cofely’s main objectives were to optimise both thermal recovery and consumption of auxiliary equipment. The choice fell on GE’s Jenbacher type JMS 624 GS-N.L H12 gas engine turn-key installation, producing 4401 kWe and 3704kWth simultaneously, with a 70°C/105°C temperature regime. The installation also allows for a 487 kWth recovery in low temperature, with a 50°C/60°C temperature regime, which will be used to heat the future Cofely offices on site.

The installation’s global output will thus increase to 88%.

Particular attention was paid to the auxiliary equipment consumption. For this reason, variators were installed on the ventilators as well as on the set of all pumps, thus far reducing the consumed output.

The implantation of the plant was studied for a long time, in order to create the entry inlets and air outlets, as well as to integrate the acoustic upholstery, which allowed the site to keep its initial sound levels.

This turn-key installation entirely realised by Clarke Energy is the first one in France to be equipped with a type J624 engine. It’s also the first one to replace a gas turbine with a gas engine.
