Clarke Energy has successfully delivered a full Jenbacher J620 gas engine replacement at EDL’s Moranbah North Power Station in Queensland, Australia.
The project was a significant service undertaking, requiring specialist Jenbacher engine expertise and close coordination across multiple teams.
Completed safely, on schedule and without additional project costs, the replacement marked a strong positive outcome for both EDL and Clarke Energy.
The customer described the project as the best organised and best executed engine replacement they had experienced, recognising the professionalism and workmanship demonstrated by the Clarke Energy team throughout the project.
A coordinated approach from planning to completion
The success of a major gas engine replacement is often determined well before technicians arrive onsite.
For the Moranbah North project, Clarke Energy coordinated the required parts, personnel, technical resources, and tooling in advance.
The local Parts department ensured all necessary Jenbacher engine components were available, organised, and ready for use prior to the Field Service team commencing work.
The project also created a structured environment in which experienced technicians could support the development of other team members, building practical capability through direct involvement in a complex project.
Specialist expertise across a complex engine replacement
The project included removal of the existing engine, installation of the replacement unit, refurbishment and replacement of supporting systems, enclosure preparation, and final engine alignment.
With mechanical works, lifting activities and quality checks carefully sequenced, Clarke Energy delivered the replacement as an integrated project, providing EDL with a clear pathway from isolation through to recommissioning.
Safety integrated into every stage
Major engine replacements involve technically demanding activities, including equipment isolation, fluid handling, heavy lifting and precision alignment.
Through detailed planning, established procedures and experienced personnel, the project was completed safely and without incident, demonstrating the discipline required to deliver major maintenance within an operational power station environment.
Delivering value for EDL
For EDL, the value of the project extended well beyond the physical engine replacement.
The work was completed within the agreed schedule, without unexpected costs and with minimal disruption to site operations. Clear communication throughout the project also gave site personnel confidence in the progress of the work and readiness to move towards recommissioning.
The result was a high-quality Jenbacher engine installation delivered safely and predictably.

Continuous improvement in service delivery
The Moranbah North engine replacement further strengthened Clarke Energy’s service capability in Australia.
Projects of this scale combine technical expertise, field experience, parts coordination and practical training, while providing valuable lessons that support future engine replacements, maintenance and overhaul programmes.
By reviewing and refining how these projects are planned and delivered, Clarke Energy continues to support more efficient, reliable, and consistent service outcomes for customers.
Well done to all of the teams involved in making this engine replacement project a success.
