Eiffage Selects Clarke Energy to Provide GE Gas Engines for Three New Greenhouses in France

  • Clarke Energy to Provide Three of GE’s Jenbacher J624 Gas Engines to Eiffage
  • Increased Output of Gas Engines to 4.5 Megawatts Provides Customer with More Power in the Same Footprint
  • 12-Year Material Stream Agreement for Spare Parts also Part of the Deal

BOUC BEL AIR, FRANCE—March 22, 2016—Clarke Energy and GE’s Distributed Power business (NYSE: GE) today announced that it is supplying an additional three Jenbacher J624 gas engines to Eiffage, with an increased output of 4.5 megawatts (MW) (rather than the 4.4 MW provided by previous models) for three new greenhouse CHP plants in France. The higher output of the machines allows Eiffage’s customers to have more power in the same footprint. The units were sold by Clarke Energy, GE’s authorised distributor of Jenbacher gas engines.

Eiffage is one of the leading engineering, construction and procurement companies in the European concessions and public works sector. Its energy business line specialises in electrical engineering, HVAC and process automation; providing comprehensive turnkey solutions including the design, construction, operation and maintenance.

“Our existing installed fleet consists of 60 of GE’s Jenbacher Type 6 gas engines and the success of this technology and Clarke Energy’s technical expertise were key reasons we chose these gas engines again for our latest greenhouse projects,” said Gilles Marguerat, agency director—energy production, Eiffage. “Through GE’s gas engine technology, we have been able to meet the growing demands of our customers and increase the performance of our facilities with a high-efficiency, cost-effective solution.”

One of GE’s Jenbacher J624 gas engines will be installed at each of the Serres Richardière, Coge Camargues and JD Prod greenhouses and will be used for combined heat and power during the winter season—from November 1 through March 31. The engines are expected to be installed by October, with commercial operation planned for November 2016.

“We have a more than 10-year relationship providing GE’s reliable and efficient Jenbacher gas engine technology for Eiffage’s customers throughout France,” said Didier Lartigue, main board director, Clarke Energy. “We are pleased to be chosen again for Eiffage’s three latest greenhouse projects, which are helping to meet the increased power needs for the country.”

As is the case of the total installed fleet, a material stream agreement (MSA) for spare parts also is part of this project. The 12-year MSA provides delivery of genuine Jenbacher gas engine spare parts for preventative maintenance based on the operating hours of the engines.

“The increased output of the J624 gas engines—from 4.4 MW to 4.5 MW—will allow Eiffage to receive more power without increasing its footprint,” said Wouter-Jan van der Wurff, general manager gas power generation for GE’s Distributed Power business. “Our Type 6 gas engines offer efficiency levels up to 87 percent, providing Eiffage with a time-independent supply of carbon dioxide (CO2) and heat through heat storage, high-quality CO2 to be used for fertilization of the plants and power to the grid at times of highest demand.”

The result of continuous enhancements and extensive experience, GE’s Jenbacher Type 6 gas engines are an advanced and reliable addition to the product line. The 1,500-rpm engine speed results in a high power density with low installation costs, and its pre-combustion chamber achieves high efficiency with low emissions.

GE’s authorised distributor Clarke Energy is celebrating 1 gigawatt of installed Jenbacher gas engines this year in France.
