Clarke Energy wins REA Innovation Award

Awards Winner Innovation 2014 KNOWSLEY, LIVERPOOL Clarke Energy wins REA Award 2014 for Innovation for a project creating renewable power from heat. The technology was supplied to Agri-Gen’s anaerobic digestion facility in Suffolk.

  • Clarke Energy wins British Renewable Energy Award 2014 for Innovation
  • Award is for a project that uses GE’s Clean Cycle [1] technology to generate renewable electricity from surplus heat created from a Jenbacher biogas gas engine.
  • The project has been developed by Agri-Gen and is located in Rendlesham, Suffolk.

Clarke Energy has been announced the winner of the Innovation Award at the British Renewable Energy Awards 2014. Competition was tight with a total of 39 companies short-listed under 12 categories.

The award is in recognition for the development of its first project with a cutting edge organic rankine cycle (ORC) technology that utilises heat to produce power. The project in question has been developed by Agri-Gen in Suffolk, where an anaerobic digester produces biogas from agricultural materials using a GE’s Jenbacher combined heat and power biogas engine type JMS 620 to generate 4.6MWe of renewable electricity. The facility was not able to make full use of the heat produced from the gas engines and opted to install two of GE’s Clean Cycle* generators. These ORC convert the surplus heat into 228kW of additional renewable electricity, increasing the electrical efficiency of the biogas power plant from 43.0 to 46.2%. The biogas engine and ORC units were supplied, engineered and installed and will be maintained by Clarke Energy.

Clarke Energy is delighted with this award and would like to thank both the REA for this acknowledgement and Agri-Gen for supporting our bid.

The award follows close on the heels of two other awards that have been won by Clarke Energy, including the Queen’s Award 2014 for International Trade and Insider Media’s International Trade Award in 2013. Clarke Energy was short-listed for the Skills Development Award at the 2013 REA award.

Alan Fletcher, Main Board Director at Clarke Energy, attended the event and commented:

REA Awards 2014

“We are delighted to receive this award for the development of our first Clean Cycle project at Agri-Gen’s anaerobic digester in Suffolk. The facility is able to both generate additional revenues for our customer and convert energy which would have been under-utilised into a valuable source of power.”
