CIBSE Event at Kings Cross CHP plant a great success

Clarke Energy showcases GE’s Jenbacher combined heat and power (CHP) engines at the 67 acre, Kings Cross development at Hoare Lea. Hoare Lea is a firm of consulting engineers, specialising in mechanical, electrical and environmental engineering. The event took place on the evening of 26th November and worked in conjunction with The Chartered Institution of Building Services (CIBSE).Clarke Energy announced this project featuring giant pink engines in 2012.

Hoare Lea was kind enough to let us host the event in their Grade II listed, award winning offices in London, Western Transit Shed. The event was oversubscribed once registration went live online. On the night over sixty delegates attended the event, which included CIBSE members, consultants and stakeholders from the wider industry.

A photograph of a presentation at the Kings Cross CIBSE event held by Clarke EnergyThe event was initiated by a guided tour of two Clarke Energy CHP systems, which  incorporates 3 of GE’s Jenbacher gas engines. The engines are located at King’s Cross which together will supply 100% of the development’s heat and offset almost 80% of its electrical power demand. This gave people a chance to see the energy centre and how the district heating scheme was put together and works.

The CHP engine not only generate electricity, which will be fed into the grid network, but will also provide heat for the local district heating system (DHS). All of the 70 buildings at King’s Cross will be connected to the DHS. When the project is complete, carbon emissions are expected to be a third less than ‘business as usual’ and up to 60% less than 2001 levels.

Following on from the guided tours, there were refreshments, along with presentations from Vital, Argent, Hoare Lea and Clarke Energy, which were technical and informative.

Due to the exceptional feedback Clarke Energy in conjunction with CIBSE are likely to run another event at Kings Cross in the New Year. Watch this space for similar events in the coming months.
